This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students, who are on the Autism Spectrum, have extreme difficulty in expressing their interpersonal and social communication. "The task of the modern education is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts." - C.S. Lewis

My students are primary age Special Education learners on the Autism Spectrum.

Students on the Autism Spectrum have difficulty with communication interpersonally and socially, in addition to learning and emotional difficulties. My class is Autistic Support and is located within a K-4 elementary school in a diverse, economically distressed urban neighborhood in a very large city. Our school is dedicated to providing all students with the academic, technological, and social skills needed to be productive and contributing citizens in our society. Our school is on the rise, and we were recognized by the district for our school-wide positive behavior plan that created an environment that lead to a significant increases in math and literacy across all grade levels.

My Project

Our students would use these five iPad minis as an outlet to express their interpersonal and social communication. These devices provide the ability to use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) applications that teach children how to construct sentences using symbols and pictures. These devices use symbol-supported communication applications to promote language development and grow communication skills, from beginning to advanced communicators. For example, students will be able to express their emotions, needs, and other communication using symbols. In addition to communication apps, these devices allow our learners interactive applications to develop and bolster literacy and math skills.

These devices will significantly develop my students' communication abilities, which is integral to the development of holistic students.

Communication is vital for displaying and demonstrating emotions, interacting socially, and becoming an active learner. Our students have difficulty expressing these three areas, and with the help of these devices, our students will have the tools to succeed.
