Dear America: Teaching History to Middle Schoolers

My students need classroom sets of 2 Dear America book sets to help enrich the material and spark their interest more.

My Students

Whenever a school year starts and I get my new students for the first time, they always seem to want to tell me stories about themselves. That gave me the idea of using stories from the view point of kids their age to help tell them a little more about history.

My students are a very vibrant and diverse group of 100 students who attend a low income, high poverty public school.

Their abilities range from way above grade level all the way to needed that extra boost to get them near grade level. Each student has their own personality, their own story, and often their own trial or struggle. School is often the only place these students get a chance to experiment and explore into the wonderful world of education. In our area, its not really cool to be smart but at least we can try to make it interesting. My students love to experiment with information and run with ideas.

My Project

These books will help to create and foster the idea that history is fun to learn and isn't boring. These books will let the students see situations from the eyes of 11 and 12 year old kids. Using these books, we will read about the events and then create our own journals to share how we see certain events in time. By getting one written from a girl's point of view and one from a boy's point of view will allow the students to experiment with that idea and try to write from that perspective. The students will get to see the differences in the way people see situations.

Our school started a new program where the entire school focuses on reading for a portion of the day, twice a week.

These books would be valuable for my students to use during that time and they could be used by other teachers as well to help enrich their students history knowledge. These books will help make history interesting and engaging. Please help my students, and my school, see the broader picture of history and how interesting it can be!
