Creating Reflective Readers

My students need reading workshop materials to build skills in reading and maximize their independent work time.

My Students

How do I keep my students learning when I am teaching a small group? Students are interested in talking about books, and responding with their groups, but they lack exciting materials to guide them.

My students are highly engaged and curious third graders.

They seek out new challenges, and are excited to talk about what they are learning. I have a broad range of skill levels in my class, from my English language learners who are working on building vocabulary and phonics skills, to my GATE students who love to read and discuss literature. I am constantly looking for challenges that meet my students at their various levels. It must be high interest that will accommodate different skill levels.

My Project

I have used several of the resources from Lakeshore with great success. The Reader's Theater scripts are high interest because my students love to act. They can work on these independently to build their fluency. The Reading Response pads and journals will give my literature circle groups inspiration to respond to the stories they are reading even when I am not there encouraging conversation. The phonics center gives my students who are still working on decoding a chance to practice their skills while I am working with other groups. My goal is to give my students lots of engaging, rigorous, and fun tasks to work on while I am working with their classmates in small groups. The materials I have chosen will last a long time, provide enough material so that they can be reused in class, and will excite my students in their independent learning.

My students are terrific students, who deserve the very best.

I want them to be constantly engaged and excited during their independent work time, and I want them to move beyond just reading and talking superficially about books. The materials I have selected will broaden and enrich their learning beyond the curriculum. Ultimately, they will be able to challenge themselves and become more self directed learners.
