My students need 1 set of clips for finding evidence in text, 5 comfy pillows, 1 set of teaching reading skills activity centers, 1 set of Jamaica's Read Alongs, and 4 sets of markers.
We all know the quote about giving a man a fish (which only feeds him a day) vs. teaching a man to fish (which feeds him a lifetime). That is how I feel about teaching reading! It is a lifelong skill that opens so many doors.
My 2nd graders attend a public school serving k-5 graders where about 82% of the students receive free and/or reduced lunch.
They are a group of hard working, sweet kids who are genuinely excited about learning. My school is recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as a Wisconsin School of Promise; the state recognizes schools that serve families in poverty and have high achievement. The success is a tribute to our committed staff, effective use of available resources, and community connections.
My Project
The comfy pillows will be used to create a reading center filled with the teaching reading skills activity centers, and the Jamaica's Read Alongs. These resources will provide me with the tools I need to increase reading levels and so much more. In addition to increasing students' reading levels I will be able to create fluent readers with high comprehension skills, who can go back in their text and find evidence to support their ideas.
I know this sounds like a pretty tall order, but with these hard working students (their equally hard working teacher) and the right tools I know we can do it.
Creating exceptional readers opens up so many doors for children, and provides so many more opportunities for their futures.
When working in a school like I do, this can be a priceless gift.
