Creating A Community Of Owl Stars

My students need classroom whiteboards, a read along library, and CD players to help their new classroom seem like the other classrooms.

My Students

Do you remember walking into your 1st grade classroom on the first day of school? These students are being overflowed from other schools into a brand new section of 1st grade with nothing but desks, empty shelves, and a rug in their classroom.

My student population is very transient.

Most students live in the run down apartment complexes around the neighborhood. We are also considered the "overflow" campus, so when students do not have spaces at their home school, they are bused to our campus. We are a Title 1 school where most of our students receive government assistance for lunch.

My Project

I am starting a new classroom of 1st graders. Part of starting a new classroom is starting a new listening station for our implementation of the Daily 5. With the listening center, with the six headphones, CD player, and the 3 sets of books on CD I have requested, students will be able to accomplish the "Listen To Reading" section of The Daily 5. The magnetic whiteboards requested with allow the students to complete the "Work on Writing" and "Word Work" sections of The Daily 5.

My project is so important to my students' sense of self worth.

I want them to be able to walk into the classroom and know it is a 1st grade classroom and not a 3rd grade classroom being turned into a first grade classroom. I want them to feel that they are being given equal opportunities as the other classrooms. It is important that they be able to feel that there is no difference between their classroom and other classrooms.
