My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? Do you remember the excitement of discovering a favorite character? My students have just met lovable characters but don't have copies of the multiple books in which they appear.

The students in my classroom learn in a self-contained classroom at a public school in New York City.

They have been diagnosed with autism or are speech and language impaired. They struggle with daily living skills, social interactions, and academic activities. Entering kindergarten was a difficult transition for them. They have finally adjusted to the strenuous school day and are motivated by stories read aloud. My students especially love when I read books about their favorite characters and have been begging me to read more. It is so wonderful to see my students excited about literacy!

My Project

I am requesting a variety of series books. These books have characters, like Biscuit or Froggy, who are the main character in each story. By listening to these books read aloud, my students are able to synthesize information to learn more about the character. After I have read these books out loud multiple times, my students are able to go back and read these books independently!

I want my students to be successful and confident readers.

By providing them with motivating books, my students will be engaged during reading time. These fun characters will help bring books to life for my students!
