Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One of my favorite parts of my job is teaching US Government to a room of students from other countries and getting them ready to be the first in their families to go to college. Our biggest unit is on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties and I cannot wait to begin!
In my senior AP US Government class I have some students who are new to the country, and most speak English as their second language.
Many work 25 hours a week. Although this is an AP class, this will be many students first AP.
Our school is a comprehensive public school in a major city. The school has around 900 students, 47 percent black, 43 percent Hispanic, 6 percent white, and 3 percent Asian. 89 percent of students receive free or reduced lunch. In 2014, 20 percent of the ninth graders were repeating. Some students travel up to 2 hours to get to school because we are bussed.
This week, I assigned 8 pages of reading one night. The next day I gave a reading quiz. Many were very concerned because they were overwhelmed by the reading 8 pages of homework. I was reminded that I need to begin again with reading comprehension strategies and study skills and build endurance. I love getting students to be successful readers and teaching the skills needed to study.
My Project
One part of this project is studying and reading college level texts. With resources like index cards, markers, and highlighters students will be able to learn and practice new reading strategies and study skills. We will use the cork board to create a Word Wall. This will be a collection of all the terms students need to know, and will be different for each unit.
This group of seniors needs help with their executive functioning skills and long term planning. I was a bit shocked when my students said they would prefer paper agenda books and asked for help balancing long term assignments and their after school jobs, but I am so excited to help them with this skill that will help them beyond high school. We will work on internalizing their learning about homework.
Lastly, with so many English Language Learners, it is important for me to enhance my content with visual, audio and the story telling of Civil Rights movements.
My students want to be successful learners and college ready.
I will have the materials necessary to help them. Through practice with their flash cards, Word Wall, & reading strategies will empower them to tackle any reading.
In a recent survey a student said "I would like to experience a high level curriculum to get ready for college." Another said they want to learn "how the government works." With these materials they will learn about the US Government with differentiated resources.
