Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our music department and our students thirst for more music education has grown exponentially since the reinstatement of the music program. How can we continue to challenge and engage our modern students?
We are in the 3rd year of a music program in a public elementary school in "the big city." The school is both ethnically, socially, and academically diverse.
The school lost its music funding about 8 years ago and many of the students have been without music; most of them are having it for the first time. This year, they found funding to hire a music teacher and the moment I was introduced, I saw an excitement from both students and teachers that I haven't seen before.
There is a constant hunger for music education that I have seen in my short tenure at the school. There is strong interest in different performing opportunities. We currently offer general music classes to all students, who I see once week. We currently also offer many performance opportunities and have been recognized for our efforts. However, these program depend on the generosity of philanthropic persons to continue to grow. We try to offer as many different experiences as possible to educate the whole child.
My Project
In order to support my students and provide an enriching curriculum, I am humbly requesting a set of ukuleles and cases to start a ukulele ensemble. I was fortunate enough to purchase a few ukuleles shared by students in the primary grade levels and after 2 years of use, the students have become very proficient with the instruments. However, due to wear and tear, the classroom set of instruments that were donated are in disrepair and we have been asked to show our students talents.
With these performance-quality instruments, the students will become much more engaged in the learning and will feel much more ownership of learning the instrument. Our students would feel much more success in playing an instrument that stays in tune and is of quality. Having these quality instrument will also teach them pride and will learn how to care for them. They will see the value in practice, self-determination, and persistence.
The new instruments and cases will give the students and sense of pride when they are performing.
We will be able to show off our students' talents and not worry about sounding out-of-tune or "bad."
My hope is to continue to instill a love for music, a passion for playing, and confidence in performing.
