I am restarting a music program in a public elementary school in "the big city." The school is both ethnically, socially, and academically diverse. The school lost it's music funding about 8 years ago and many of the students have been without music; most of them are having it for the first time. This year, they found funding to hire a music teacher and the moment I was introduced, I saw an excitement from both students and teachers that I haven't seen before. There is a constant hunger for music education that I have seen in my short tenure at the school. There is strong interest in different performing opportunities. We currently offer general music classes to all students whom I see once week. We currently also offer choir after school. Hopefully in the upcoming years, I will be able to incorporate other performing ensembles such as band, ukulele club, recorder club, and school-musical. We try to offer as many different experiences as possible to educate the whole child.
