My Students

Maya Angelou once stated, "It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength." My students need to be educated on diversity in the classroom through cultural awareness and interactive lessons explaining the civil rights movement.

My students are a diverse group of second grade students.

The majority of my students are military children. A great percentage of my students are receiving free and reduced lunch. All of my students are very encouraging and helpful, but don't completely understand the civil rights movement and what it has done for our country. I would love for them to explore cultural diversity through books and interactive lessons.

My Project

My students need the resources that I am requesting to understand the civil rights movement and diversity. I am asking for biographies of famous African Americans including Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Harriet Tubman. We have a few biographies, but I want to give the students a chance to have their own book and conduct a group research study on the importance of each African American. I would also like for the students to have a "mimio" which is an interactive system that attaches to the whiteboard, computer, and projector. I will be able to use it to play short, educational videos of the civil rights movement, as well as connect to Scholastic and other educational websites. This will also be used by the students to build timelines, thinking maps, and group PowerPoint Presentations to share with the class. In addition, my students will be able to use this technology in other subjects areas throughout the year.

My project is a much needed request to study the impact of the civil rights movement and the importance of diversity.

It will impact the way they think or react in various situations at school or in a social environment. The broad impact of these resources will benefit the many classes I will teach throughout my teaching career and will have a positive impact on my students and society.
