My Students
We always say that in order to get where we want to go we must first know where we came from. In order to make the United States a better place in the future, I hope to teach my students the way that the United States has developed in the past.
The school that my students attend is one that is located in small-town South Carolina.
The school is considered a High Risk school due to low test scores and below average graduation rates. The school is also considered a High Poverty area, with the vast majority of students being able to apply for free or reduced lunch. Many of my students have less than adequate home situations, and several come to school to eat their only two meals of the day. Many of these same students do not know the basic history of the small Southern town that they currently live in, a place that once was a small window into the development of the typical Southern experience. It comes as no surprise that these same students have very little understanding of the development of the United States and how important their own area was in the development of the Southern economy that drove the nations' success of the 1700 and 1800s.
My Project
I hope to use these materials to create a classroom environment built upon the students' thoughts and ideas. I have found that something as simple as chart paper can be transformed into the vehicle that drives the students' learning experience. I have found that the key to educational success is not how much the teacher knows, but in how much the student understands. I believe that chart paper and markers will allow the students to collaborate within the learning experience and do more peer instruction and peer review. Ultimately, my classroom will be transformed into a learning environment in which the students' work will cover the walls and the content knowledge will be surrounding them without a teacher having to say a word. The teacher in my classroom will be able to return to the facilitator of educational enrichment, as the student will take on the active role of being the instructor of knowledge.
This project will hopefully make the students realize that there is a world for them that is rich in knowledge.
These kids must realize that they are not required to stay in their poverty stricken town for their entire lives and can pursue dreams outside of South Carolina and outside of the United States. As things are right now, I will have difficulty teaching the students about the places outside of our small town without the proper resources. Thank you for taking the time to read this
