My Students

My 5th and 6th grade students are part of a year-long project that has a production company called "Wave Works." They write, film, and edit biweekly newscasts for their peers. They also film, edit and create DVD's of special events in our school which provide recorded memories of special activities

My students are in a K-12 Charter School.

We are project-based, and my 5th and 6th graders are members of a production company. They have learned how to write scripts, film using a digital camera, and edit the film to produce exciting newscasts. They students are very creative and have generated impressive documentaries on many events and activities within the school. For example, they recently filmed the high school students' poetry slam and student fashion show and have edited the film and created DVD's of the events for the participants and others to have as a memento. The students also have recorded the kindergarten plays and first grade shows, and again, created DVD's for distribution to those who want to remember these events. Our digital camera is outdated, and difficult for my production team to use, but these inventive, creative students have managed! My students are enthusiastic, cooperative learners; they have worked together to produce many amazing records of school events.

My Project

As stated previously, my students have a Production Company, and are in need of a new digital camera. Currently, the AC adapter for the camera is lost, and is not available to replace. We therefore, have to rely on the battery and wallcharger to be able to use the camera. We have been in the middle of filming a presentation, and had the battery become low and quit. It has been a challenge to make sure it is at maximum charge in order to film on demand! A new camera with power cord would be valuable, as the members of our team could utilize this source of power when recording activities and events where a power source was available. My current students, unfortunately, have to continually deal with the irresponsibility of cameramen from a few years ago who lost the power cord. I would like to have them fully concentrate on the techniques of filming, rather than worry about battery power. I know my students will respect new equipment, and understand the value of being responsible.

My students have been such great members of our school community.

They have documented most major events and activities, and given back through providing DVD's of the events. It would be extremely beneficial for them to have a new digital camera to record these events, and be able to feel confident that it would work correctly! They have studied the art of filmmaking, have learned to utilize editing technology, so to have a good camera would really make a difference for them!
