Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Should I lecture my students and use the boring textbook to teach about the value of the ocean in the development of the United States and California? Or should we read a novel about a man that spends 2 years aboard a ship traveling around the world? My students prefer novels that give a first hand account.

I teach history at an urban school.

Many of my students are still learning English. My class size averages 36 students. These two facts makes maintaining interest in the textbook a challenge. However, I have found that when we read more first person accounts of history, the attendance, behavior, interest and motivation of the students dramatically improves. Also, I enjoy teaching more when the kids are engaged and working on a goal. Two Years Before the Mast was written by a man who had a port city here in California named after him. The parents also like when their children can tell them about the history they are learning. They have told me about suddenly having children who are more willing to talk about their school day.

My Project

Two Years Before the Mast is the biography of Richard Henry Deans Jr. He travels aboard two ships. He arrived in California when it was still part of Mexico and describes the life and the people beautifully. As many of my students are of Mexican heritage, I think this book will help them to better understand the development of California.

Teaching history today is more of a challenge than ever.

My students just want to “google” everything. I want them to learn about US and California history while see how others once lived. California and US history will come alive for my students with Two Years Before the Mast!
