Helen Keller once said, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." Our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders would like to work together to learn volleyball fundamentals but don't have the volleyballs!
Our school is a Chicago Public School, providing high-quality, literacy-focused elementary education to students from Kindergarten through eighth grade.
As a CPS-designated Fine and Performing Arts Magnet Cluster School, we deliver a strong, core academic curriculum, richly enhanced by an arts integration program and fine arts classes. The extra curricular clubs and sports teams are run by teacher and parent volunteers. The 6th, 7th, and 8th graders have an interest in volleyball and would like to learn the fundamentals needed to start a traveling team. Parents have volunteered to run it but are in need of equipment.
My Project
Sports offer children a variety of social and emotional building block experiences that go far beyond the scoreboard. Team membership can be a wonderful way to learn how mutual support, personal sacrifice, and group decision making interplay with competition. Likewise, athletics presents opportunities for kids to identify and pursue goals, build determination, and process the feelings associated with defeat and victory. All these ingredients pave the way for a well-rounded perspective on life, perhaps the greatest benefit of sports. Introducing volleyball to our students gives us the chance to teach our students these important lessons and how to apply what they have learned to other areas of their lives.
At this time our school only has Girls on the Run and basketball.
Volleyball would be a great addition! Our students will learn teamwork, the three P's; PRACTICE, PATIENCE, and PERSISTENCE, fair play, leadership, being a good sport, a sense of pride, socialization, and exercise. Help us get the volleyballs we need to make our intramural and traveling team take place this year and for many years to come.
