Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education." Martin Luther King Jr. and the 9th grade team want to support character education for our youth.

95% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch.

90% of our students are Hispanic, 10% are African-American. 20% of our students are English Language Learners, higher percentage than in most other NY charter schools. 13% of our students are special needs, a higher percentage than in most other NY charter schools. Studies indicate that disenfranchised students are more likely to be bullied and feel powerless to make a difference in their communities.

My Project

This generation of students benefits from a variety of forms of education. Movies are a good way to open the discussion that is very difficult to start. It makes it hard to deny that bullying goes on and/or is a serious issue and I think the documentary "Bully" will give them real life examples to discuss that can make them question the implication of being a bully as well as a bystander.

This trip would be part of the many efforts that we have made to increase unity and community in our school.

Reaching the ninth grade would allow us to begin to change the tone, that we can all do good in and out of class and hopefully reinforce positive actions towards one another.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
