My Students

Rowe Runners are rock stars! Currently all Pre-K through 5th grade teachers, emphasizes the teaching of reading skills, such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Our teachers and students work hard on these skills daily.

Our students are rock stars!

Every day, we open our doors to more than 800 students, who arrive at our school with smiles on their face daily. Our students are among the highest percentages of children from low-income families, and English as a Second Language Families as well. Despite their economic level, our students are hard works, who love to explore and describe their understanding of our world through text connections; in addition to literacy conversations.

My Project

The essential focus of this project is to Hook the student's to reading. Reading aloud is widely recognized as the single most important activity leading to literacy acquisition. Among other things, reading aloud builds word-sound awareness in children, a potent predictor of reading success. For this project, I am requesting a variety of reading books, for example: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and etc. for students to select to read independently. During their literacy block, the students will select a book of interest to them, the students will be afforded the opportunity to turn and talk to their partner and ask questions, clarify confusion, and ideas related to the text. What I want the student's to learn is that reading can be fun and enjoyable! My greatest hope is for the student's to begin reading with a purpose, and developing critical questions while reading.

If we are able to accomplish this, students will be better able to: comprehend and critique text, use multiple reading strategies, understand and use robust vocabulary, read with increased fluency, read multiple genres, select appropriate text, use text features to locate and synthesize information, and effectively discuss reading content in pairs and small groups.
