Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The California coast is due for another big earthquake. Engineers around the area are working hard to retrofit and re-design buildings and bridges to ensure human safety in the event of the "Big One".
My students live in an area that experiences earthquakes regularly but they have yet to experience a devastating earthquake that drastically impacts their community.
However, my students do live with other economic and social challenges that make their daily lives more difficult. Despite those challenges, my students are full of enthusiasm, curiosity, and love. They are constantly asking questions and making connections between what we learn in class and the outside world.
My Project
With the materials I am requesting, students will be able to engage in a solution-oriented project where they will implement real engineering techniques to design skyscrapers and bridges that outlast a big earthquake. After studying techniques like cross-bracing, sheer walls, base insulators, and more, students will design their buildings and create them using the K'NEX pieces. The seismograph will help students visualize the p- and s-waves of the earthquake and the weight set will simulate people and furniture in the buildings.
My students are a part of the next generation of engineers.
Exposing them to hands-on, interactive projects like this one not only develops their interest in science but also provides them with more knowledge on how they can help their community and the rest of the world when the "Big One" strikes.
