In today's world, where we see an increase in technology use at a rapid fire rate, it is hard for us as individuals to keep up with the latest products, let alone classroom teachers. Yet, we need to make sure that our students know how to use the technology around them, and use it safely.
I teach at a Title 1 public school in Oakland, California, where the tech industry from the Silicon Valley and SF is impacting our students more and more.
As a TK- 5th grade Science teacher, technology is expected to be incorporated into our science curriculum in conjunction with integrating NGSS, despite the fact that we don't have the resources we need at our hands.
My students love getting to come to the Science Lab. It's a safe haven for them to explore, experiment, and design. It gives them ways to access science in a way that is more than just sit down and listen. In fact ,we rarely sit in our seats! They love getting to watch short videos that expand on concepts and experiments we've done in lab at the end of a session, and they love taking photographs to document their work even more.
My Project
My students would love to have a Lab iPad which can be used to take photos of their work, video chemical reactions they are discovering, and quickly look up more information to a question they may have. My students also love having some quiet music playing while they work. Having an iPad and speakers will make it easier for me to strike up the music when it's time to clean-up!
Currently we project on our white board, which someone always has to erase before we play a video. We would love a projector screen, so we don't have to erase our class notes, and to increase the picture quality of some of our science videos.
Finally, black pencils. When you have 400 students walking in and out of the Science Lab every week pencils disappear. By switching over to black pencils, it will be easier for students to help keep the lab pencils inside the lab. Resources are limited at our school, so every pencil counts!
My students have made so much progress this year!
From the first day of school where I was scrambling to fund goggles, to seeing how much responsibility and growth has happened in our portable turned science lab, I couldn't be more proud. I made a promise to my students that the more they demonstrated their ability to be safe and responsible in the science lab that more opportunities I would bring into the lab for them. And I intend to keep that promise, with the help of supporters like you!
