My Students

Read! Read! Read! That is what we love in first grade! During the school year students check out books from our classroom library and our school library. What happens when summer comes, however, and many kids don't have adequate reading material at home? This proposal will help solve that problem.

My students are smart and creative.

They are excited to learn to read! I have abilities in my classroom ranging from Special Needs to High Ability. Some come from homes where English is not spoken. They come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. They all want to read. However, sometimes it is a bit harder to engage boys in reading than girls. I worry that over the summer boys will not have books of high interest at their fingertips, and therefore will not read as much as they should.

My Project

I am requesting 11 copies of The Star Wars Visual Dictionary. In our classroom, we have one copy of this book and it is by far the most requested book by the first grade boys. My own personal copy is starting to fall apart from so much reading. I love to see the boys so engaged in reading. I have started collecting books to give out to my students that they can have for their own personal collections for summer. I would like to add enough copies of the Star Wars Visual Dictionary so that each boy in my class will have one to take home for the summer to keep them motivated reading.

Research has found that students tend to lose some of their reading skill over the summer months.

I want to change this! Providing high interest, engaging reading material for the kids over the summer is the first step. This proposal will also benefit younger siblings who will also have access to the books. Books that are funded after we leave for summer will come in the fall and will be given to students then. Thank you for considering our proposal!
