Book Lovers Unite!

My students need these 51 titles for the reading we do every day. They are avid readers and I need to provide the best books I can to inspire their great reading habits.

My Students

Contrary to what you may hear about kids these days, my 4th graders read a lot! That's the problem. I cannot keep up with them. With the explosion of great children's literature and students who are wild are wild about reading it has been hard to keep the shelves stocked and updated.

I teach in an urban school.

It is racially and economically diverse and is a neighborhood school. In this school it is cool to read! Reading doesn't make you a nerd. It is really the popular thing to do. It is the norm to have a book in your hand as you walk the halls of our school. However, our classroom library is starting to dwindle and age. I have already spent much of my own money, but students have read most of my books. It used to be I would bring in a new series and introduce the kids to it. And you could often find me sharing a new title I had just read with one particular student who I just knew would love it. But recently in isn't just me recommending books! My kids are coming to me more and more with titles they say I need in our classroom library. We actually have a clipboard filled with all their requests!

My Project

And so we need some books. The kids will read, talk and write about these books. And I don't want to lose the momentum my kids have with their love of reading. I need new literature to continue this reading epidemic and to continue to inspire and nurture what I hope is the beginning of a lifelong habit. I also want to be able to respond to their book recommendations and demonstrate that I value their input and that sharing book ideas is what adult readers do all the time. I need more books that represent the contemporary market and reflect my students' interests. And I need more books to reflect the wide choice of genres my kids are reading. We know the the more time spent reading the better reader you are. My students are living proof of that. But with that comes the responsibility of feeding that habit. I need to keep up with my kids' reading habits by supplying them with the books they need.

With your help I can do just that.

We can put our money where our mouth is and say to these children "keep reading". We've told them to read every night at home. We've told the parents to read to them no matter how old their kids get. We as teachers have provided them with time to read daily in class. And they listened. My students are willing readers. Please help me support their efforts to continue to be lifelong readers.
