My Students

Imagine walking into a classroom on the first day of school and not understanding a word the teacher is saying. That was the reality for five of my students this year that are joining us from France!

This year we have the unique opportunity to work hand and hand with the French NATO program.

Our school has been identified as the host school for officers and their families stationed here from France. Therefore, I have five students in my classroom whose primary language is French. As you can imagine, it was a difficult transition for everyone. Even faced with this challenge, the students come in everyday eager to learn!

My Project

Needless to say, the reading and writing aspect of our day are the hardest parts. The materials in this project will provide these students visual and hands on experiences during our communication skills block. The students really excel with these types of learning materials. This project contains a variety of activities that can be used for reading and writing centers. One of my favorite items is the Sequence & Write Story Tiles. The students have a set of picture tiles that they must put in order to create a story. They then put words to the picture and make their story come to life. It also contains various games and activities that the students can take right to their seats and work on, as opposed to boring worksheets. All of these materials are very colorful and graphic, which is imperative for these students to have!

Just imagine trying to read this if it were written in French (and of course you didn't speak French!).

That is the daily reality for my students. It is my wish to continue to help them grow as learners and these materials will help make that wish come true.
