My Students

Great writers have read great books. Building easy access literature into a first grade classroom is essential.

Oh to be six and just discovering the world of print!

My first grade students are devouring books and attempting to become great authors themselves! They read and write each day. They do author studies to learn how the authors they love entice them into their stories. These students live in a small community of 8,000 in a fishing, shipyard river community. Their backgrounds are working class military, shipbuilding, service sector families. They attend a small k-2 school of 250 students.

My Project

When you help purchase big books for our class, you are enabling children to interact with print in a BIG way. Big books allow all children to see the pictures and the print when the teacher is reading. The stories chosen are simple and have a pattern. They help children see how to write a book. Many of them will replicate these books in their own writing. Students will also read these books in partner reading. They will practice their reading and become more fluent and accomplished.

Children are so amazed and grateful when someone has helped them with their learning. These students deserve the very best start to their educational career. You may very well be impacting who they become and what they do in future years.
