My Students

"No skill shapes a child's future success in school or in life more than the ability to read." Bob Riley was exactly right when he said these words. Like all teachers, I want my children to be successful readers.

Our school is set in rural Maine.

Most of my children arrive by bus and some of the their rides are as long as 50 minutes one way. Most of my students are economically challenged - more than half of them qualify for free and reduced lunch. The majority are from single parent families on limited incomes. Despite these challenges, they come to school every day filled with positive attitudes and joyful spirits and sheer joy. They appreciate sharing materials that many of us take for granted - books and crayons and pencils and paper. They lovingly "read" the books we have in our classroom over and over again.

My Project

I am requesting a big book chart stand and storage unit. What is a big book? A big book is a book with enlarged text and pictures that allows an entire class to see the words and pictures during read aloud time. Big books engage the entire class because they are easily seen from a distance. They are used in early childhood settings because the text is often repetitious and the pictures are humongous. I am requesting a big book storage and display unit. My students will be able to select the big books that hold their interest from the books that are stored within the unit. They will be able to use a pointer and point to the words as they pretend to read. They will be able to read to a friend and listen to the friend read to them. Most importantly, they will feel like readers because they will have the books they need at their fingertips.

Requesting a display and storage unit is not as exciting as some of the projects here, but it is something that we really need.

Right now, the books are stuffed in a closet and are not accessible to my students because there is no way to display them without ruining them.
