Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach literacy in a middle school in a New York high needs area. My students are diverse learners at varying reading levels. I am requesting high interest books for our classroom library.

The children that I encounter on a day to day basis are faced with insurmountable obstacles.

Some live in shelters, others have parents who are incarcerated, siblings in gangs, etc. They come to school stressed and frustrated with their environment. My children come to me when they need an outlet for their frustration. Often, they have trouble expressing themselves which only adds to their aggravation and many struggle to find an appropriate way to deal with their feelings. Supplying them with high interest novels would give them a way to escape from lives into the world of fantasy.

My Project

With your help, I will be able to supply my students with new novels to spark an interest in reading. I am requesting a variety of books at different levels to reach out to all my students including The Amulet Series, Hunger Games Trilogy, Maximum Ride, Twilight Graphic Novels, etc. I believe that if they find a book they love and enjoy, they'll be motivated to keep reading book after book. Now-a-days, it is difficult to capture young readers since we are competing with computers and video games. If these books were available, it would open their minds to the land of imagination and creative thinking.

Please support my proposal and help me acquire new classroom novels to motivate my students to read.
