This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember sitting on the kitchen floor banging on pots and pans and pretending to be a drummer? Well, I would like to provide my students with the opportunity to play and explore rhythm instruments.

My students are third graders in California.

They are a curious and wonderful bunch. They are like little sponges that absorb everything they learn. Most of my students are second language learners, and some of my students are newcomers to the country. They enjoy coming to school because they have said that school is fun. I try to make learning fun.

My Project

With this project, I will be able to introduce my students to world percussion instruments. In the past, at my former school site, I gave my students the opportunity to play percussion instruments in groups. They collaborated to create rhythmic pieces that they would share with the whole class. They had a blast and this would always foster teamwork and their creativity. The instruments requested include hardwood drum, bongo drum, guiro tone block, Mexican guiro and an "Instruments from Around the World Collection," just to mention a few.

The school that I work at is a new school.

This is our second year. Unfortunately, the state budget cuts have kept us from providing all our students with the opportunity to meet with the music teacher or to purchase many items that most schools take for granted. For example, art supplies and musical instruments were items that will most likely not be purchased anytime soon. If this projected is funded, this will surely make a difference.
