This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hunger and inadequate nutrition impact the ability to learn. How will students and parents choose the right foods?

I teach fourth grade in a rural, low-income area of Northern California.

We are considered a Title I school as the vast majority of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. We also have a very high percentage of ESL (English as a Second Language) students.

My Project

I am asking for a set of six series books: Food Is CATegorical by Brian P. Cleary. These books are visually appealing, ready for elementary readers, and contain great information about nutrition and healthy eating: specifically, the different food groups. The food my children consume in our school cafeteria is appalling. The amount of sugars is through the roof. Students need to be able to make sound eating decisions when they're given the choice and they must know what a "balanced diet" looks like. These books will begin to give them that opportunity.
