Back On The Oregon Trail

My students need to participate in an overnight field trip to experience the Oregon Trail hands-on, and learn about science, history, math, etc.

This project expired on May 1, 2014.

My Students

Do you remember the last time you went out into the woods and breathed fresh air? Many of my students have never explored a forest, or even left their community.

My fourth and fifth graders go to an urban school where over 90% of students receive free or reduced lunch.

Most never or rarely leave the community, and the majority speak a language other than English at home. Some don't have enough resources at home to provide books, pencils, or paper. These are very sweet kids who arrive wanting to learn, and they try their best. As it rains much of the year in our area, we spend much of our time in the classroom, even for recess. Our school is very much aware of these challenges. We provide breakfast in the classroom. We offer after-school programming that includes English classes for parents. Now my kids are very excited about the idea of participating in the overnight field trip. They are all working hard to raise the money to go. We have raised two thirds, and we just need this final bit to get us on the Oregon Trail.

My Project

Our school used to participate every year until funding became more sporadic. Students always looked forward to the trip. During the program, students are filled with so much enthusiasm for learning. The activities match the whole range of learning styles, and the experiences help non-native English speakers develop common experiences and vocabulary. Students will learn about native plants and animals, and how pioneers trapped and used them. They will learn how to map the trail. They will feel and use real logging tools as they saw wood. They will pan for gold, grind their own grains, make their own bread over a fire, churn their own butter, cook over a stove, and make candles and pioneer toys to bring back home. They will learn life skills that helped pioneers pack and make it across rivers, steep mountains, and other hazards along the way to settle the Oregon Territory. They will hear about the lives and stories of Native Americans.

Your contribution gives a once in a lifetime experience.

Students who go on it, come back changed and excited about science, history, and being in the forest and mountains. They experience history. They see that there is more to the world than their apartments and surrounding community. They are able to spend two days and a night away from bright lights, street and train noise, and urban pollution. They become inspired to search for opportunities to have similar experiences in the future.
