My Students

I am teaching children with special needs that include mental retardation, autism, speech language delays and other developmental delays. Children as young as 24 months old can be served by the public schools in my state.

When a child of age 24 months begins to receive services in our public schools, he/she may be functioning at a level much younger than his/her chronological age.

We have very few toys and manipulatives that are developmentally appropriate for some of our children. The county I teach in suffered a m5.8 earthquake in August 2011 and our school budget has been stretched very thin as two of our six schools suffered extensive damage. Portable classrooms are being used and teaching continues! I need a variety of toys for my younger children to learn and play with as they mature and gain new skills. I have a variety of learning games, toys, books and playthings for my students age three through five but need some items like beads, stacking blocks, large Legos and shape sorters for my littlest students. Won't you please help?

My Project

These toys and manipulatives will help my students match and sort colors and shapes; gain fine motor skills by pushing, pulling, opening, closing, snapping and unsnapping; learn cause and effect by pushing buttons, opening doors, stacking and shaking! These are all prerequisite skills to higher learning and hopefully, one day, these little ones can be mainstreamed into regular education classrooms. Won't you help give them the start that they desperately need?

My students will be so excited to have new and colorful toys that are appropriate for their developmental levels!

They will "work" and play eagerly, look forward to coming to school and gain the skills necessary to provide them a foundation for further learning.
