While I'm a big fan of that genre, with this project I wanted to expose children to a gripping realistic novel about survival. I knew the themes of the book would take them on an emotional roller coaster ride and our Book Club would be a safe place to explore them. \r\n\r\nAll of the Book Club students liked this book, and it was very gratifying to have students want to continue reading their book whenever their classwork was done. I even heard a few \"Just one more page, please? \" or \"Oh, this is getting good!\" comments. \r\n\r\nDuring the discussions, students loved to put themselves in Brian's shoes and share how they would try and survive and debate if their solution was practical or not. \r\nMany students connected with Brian's feeling of anxiety because it is something that they have felt, but also said it is not something they get to discuss a lot around them. \r\n\r\nHere are some students' comments describing the book:\r\n-emotionally deep: especially the part when Brian talks about his parents getting a divorce and how that happened.\r\n-Brian was resourceful. What an adventure!\r\n-It was uncomfortable and unsettling, shocking: The plane crashed in the lake and then Brian ended up drinking from that lake! And those mosquitoes! \r\n\r\nWe appreciate your generosity in providing the Hatchet books to make this Book Club possible.","fullyFundedDate":1730733501223,"projectUrl":"project/dont-leave-us-stranded-without-a-hatche/8887383/","projectTitle":"Don't Leave Us Stranded Without a Hatchet!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hedberg","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1109698"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_53006","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":647,"numTeachers":41,"percentFrplEligible":78,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":7,"percentWhite":81,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":64.3,"schoolId":53006,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Jouett Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Jouett Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/louisa-county-school-district/jouett-school/53006"}
