Autism/ABA Materials for Communication

My students need laminating sheets, a toner cartridge and velcro for Picture Exchange Communication books. PECs allow non-verbal students with autism to make requests, answer questions, etc.

My Students

Can you imagine not being able to communicate with others in an effective way? How frustrating! Non-verbal students w/autism do not have the tools to make requests for their wants/needs, answer questions or engage socially. PECS gives them a voice and enables them to functionally communicate!

I am an Autism/ABA Program Director for K-2nd grade students with autism in an urban public school with limited monetary resources.

Many of these students are non-verbal and can not use speech to communicate. A child with autism may... *Have significant difficulty acquiring and retaining skills (communication, academics, vocational skills, self-help/daily living skills) *Exhibit inappropriate and/or unsafe behaviors as a way to communicate their needs (to escape demands, acquire a tangible item, gain attention, etc) *Have difficulty initiating communication to make requests *Seem uninterested in sharing experiences or having conversations *Engage less in give-and-take social interaction with caregivers, siblings and other close relationships *Have difficulty understanding what others are saying to him *Have difficulty using the language he has to interact with others *Have difficulty using his own sentences and instead, may repeat what others say

My Project

PECS was developed as an augmentative/alternative communication intervention for individuals with autism. It does not require complex or expensive materials. PECs are typically laminated pictures or symbols with Velcro on the back. The PECs are stored in a book in which students can then choose the appropriate picture/symbol for the situation, remove it from the book, and hand it to their "communicative partner". PECS begins by teaching an individual to give a picture of a desired item to a "communicative partner". The system goes on to teach discrimination of pictures and how to put them together in sentences. In the more advanced phases, individuals are taught to answer questions and to make appropriate social comments. The PECS teaching protocol is systematically taught using prompting and reinforcement strategies that will lead to independent communication. Some learners using PECS also develop speech. Others may transition to a voice output system such as an iPad.

Giving a child with autism the gift of communication will have a significant positive impact on the quality of their life.

It will enable them to communicate with their families, teachers and peers to make requests, engage in conversation, answer questions and express their thoughts/feelings. There are over 100 scholarly articles published in support of the effectiveness of the PEC system for non-verbal individuals with autism. Please consider giving the K-8 students in Boston a voice!
