Art

My students need class sets of art supplies; including glitter glue, scented markers, fabric markers, Gel FX markers, multicultural markers and paint pens.

My Students

Since the school year began, my students have huffed and puffed every time I've asked them to draw something. I can't tell you the amount of times I heard, "Do we have to?"

One day, after hemming and hawing, one of my particularly uninspired students asked if I had anything besides crayons for them to use.

Unfortunately, the answer was no, aside from the hodgepodge collection of previously owned art supplies I had on hand. After hearing the news, a colleague lent me a set of oil pastels so my class could enter a healthy smile contest. When my students were done, there was nothing but bits of label left for me to return. They used every pastel crayon down to the end. More importantly, they all created the most beautiful original pieces of art. I almost didn't want to enter them in the contest, because that meant I wouldn't be able to keep them for my classroom.

My Project

After complimenting my little "DaVincis" immensely, I asked them what made them all produce such beautiful artwork. They told me it was the pastels, so I quickly went out and bought a class set. These are third grade inner-city kids. Most don't have any art supplies at home at all, and if they do, guess what they have… You guessed it - crayons! Of course they are less than thrilled when they are given crayons to express their creativity at school too.

After seeing what my students were capable of, my goal was to incorporate more art into their daily schedule, giving them multiple opportunities to express themselves.

These kids want more than crayons. They want cool things like different kinds of markers and supplies that smell and glitter. Who knows? If you help fund this proposal, you might be helping to create the next Leonardo DaVinci. If nothing else, you will be helping a bunch of third graders to express their real creativity.
