My Students

My students live in a world filled with the visual stimulation of popular consumer culture, but lacking exposure to a world of fine art. They live in a neighborhood where violence is common and beauty is rare.

It is delightful to teach middle school students because they are curious and they love to learn.

They desire clear structure And want to do well. Our school population, literally, is the rainbow and friendships are forged across the spectrum. Although our students all qualify for the free or reduced breakfast and lunch programs, and are all designated English Learners, they show up each day eager to learn something new in art. When asked "why take art class?", the response is an enthusiastic "to express ourselves".

My Project

Scholastic Art Magazine is a fantastic resource in so many ways. For the reluctant reader, they' are hooked into reading by the full color artworks illustrating the articles, both short and long. The Teacher's Guide includes excellent open ended questions to stimulate group and class discussions. Every issue includes an interview with a professional artist which inspires possibility for the students to imagine a career in the arts, from skateboard designers to movie set painters. A famous historical artist is featured, and the accessible text humanizes the artist, brings history alive and familiarized the reader with the works of these great people. Students are exposed to Less known and unknown artists whose cleverness, originality and skill surprise and inspire. I have used back issues for students to create group presentations, using visual, written and verbal skills.

The impact of this project brings to Life the idea that "art makes you smart".

Art Magazine is such a rich resource, supporting independent learning, group work and stimulating creative expression. I am ordering a class set of magazines which I can Use not only in my five classes of 32 students each (160 students total), but I can use in the years to come with future classes.
