Art and Music to Inspire Reading and Writing

My students need 4 children's audio books, 23 headphones, and 1 iPod player for Listening to Reading, and 15 art posters to inspire writing their realistic fiction stories.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being a 4th grade student who doesn't read at grade level. Now imagine reading along with the class grade level chapter book in the listening center. Next imagine not knowing what to write for your realistic fiction story. Now imagine being inspired by art posters to write your story.

I teach in a 4th grade Spanish bilingual classroom with 23 students, 15 boys and 8 girls between the ages of 9 and 11.

All of my students are English Language Learners with a span of Fountas and Pinnell reading levels A-P, meaning that in English they are reading at a range of levels between Kindergarten and 3rd grade. The demographics of my students are 100% Hispanic representing the following countries: Mexico, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. All of my students receive free and reduced lunch rates and are considered below the poverty level. The issues of the community are gang activity, drugs, alcohol, and poverty, all of which affect my classroom and school environment because there are never enough resources. Our school is a public urban kindergarten through fifth grade school. Out of 1,300 students, 98% come from low incomes homes, 8% receive Special Education Services, and 47% are English Language Learners. The demographics of school are 95% Hispanic.

My Project

With these audio books, headphones and an Ipod we will start a listening center with grade level texts for all students to utilize. The texts include: "Number the Stars", "Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key", "Frindle", and "Blubber". They will be able to listen to the texts at their own pace when they listen individually or they will listen as a large class as I pull a small group for guided reading. Also, it will be good to inspire students by listening to classical music while we write our realistic fiction stories. The art posters will be used to gear up for our field trip to an art museum. They will be writing realistic fiction stories based off of the setting and character of artworks that they choose. They will be studying the lives of the artists and learning about the art piece itself. They will spend time creating their setting and characters to develop their own realistic fiction story inspired by the artwork. This is an excellent way to weave music and art into the development of writing and reading skills

This project will impact my students by making the grade level chapter books accessible to my students who need the extra support.

Students will also benefit from the multimedia access to books to address different learning styles. Students will also practice writing realistic fiction stories inspired by art. This will likely increase their interest in art and in writing. They will pay more attention to the details of the artwork and use their imagination to create their own story.
