These resources have become an important component of our school's healing-centered and transformative SEL practices by providing students with a safe, supportive, and non-punitive way to regulate their bodies and emotions during moments of overwhelm, dysregulation, frustration, anxiety, or sensory overload.\r\n\r\nFor many students, particularly those with sensory regulation needs, trauma responses, attention difficulties, or challenges with emotional self-regulation, movement is a critical tool for calming the nervous system. The trampoline provides students with structured proprioceptive and vestibular input that helps release built-up stress, excess energy, frustration, and emotional tension in a healthy and safe way. Staff have observed students visibly calming their bodies, slowing their breathing, and regaining emotional control after brief opportunities to use the trampoline.\r\n\r\nThe privacy screen has also been an essential part of the intervention's success. By shielding students from being viewed by peers or passersby in the hallway, the screen helps preserve student dignity and reduces feelings of embarrassment, shame, or fear of judgment while regulating. This creates a more emotionally safe environment where students can focus on calming themselves rather than worrying about being watched by others.\r\n\r\n\r\nOverall, these resources have strengthened our school's commitment to equity, inclusion, and transformative SEL by helping students feel safe, supported, and empowered to return to learning with greater emotional readiness and confidence.","fullyFundedDate":1745969391201,"projectUrl":"project/leap-into-learning-a-trampoline-for-cal/9062550/","projectTitle":"Leap into Learning: A Trampoline for Calm, Focused Minds","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Encarnacion","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5836255_orig.jpg?crop=576,576,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755316461738","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-encarnacion"},{"teacherId":5836255,"projectId":7839518,"letterContent":"The donation of smaller backpacks for our new immigrant students and students experiencing transitional living had an immediate and meaningful impact on some of our youngest learners in Pre-K and Kindergarten. For many of our 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old students, these backpacks represented far more than a school supply item; they became a symbol of belonging, dignity, stability, and care during what is often a tremendously challenging transition period for families.\r\n\r\nMany of our youngest students were previously carrying oversized, damaged, or makeshift bags that were difficult for their small bodies to manage. Receiving backpacks designed appropriately for their age and size helped students physically navigate the school day more independently and comfortably. Students were visibly excited and proud to carry backpacks that fit them properly and looked similar to those of their peers, helping reduce feelings of difference or embarrassment.\r\n\r\nThe impact extended beyond the physical item itself. Students demonstrated:\r\n\r\n* Increased confidence and independence carrying and organizing their belongings\r\n* Greater school engagement and excitement about attending school\r\n* Improved sense of belonging and inclusion among peers\r\n* Increased emotional comfort and security during daily transitions\r\n* Pride in having something of their own that was new and age-appropriate\r\n\r\nFor our new immigrant students, the backpacks also communicated a powerful message: you are welcome here. Families expressed gratitude knowing their children entered school equipped with a basic necessity that helped them feel prepared and included despite significant life transitions.\r\n\r\nUltimately, the backpack donation became an important part of fostering a compassionate, equitable, and healing-centered school environment where even our youngest students could begin their educational journey feeling valued, supported, and connected to the school community.","fullyFundedDate":1703977028711,"projectUrl":"project/size-matters/7839518/","projectTitle":"Size Matters!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Encarnacion","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5836255_orig.jpg?crop=576,576,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755316461738","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-encarnacion"},{"teacherId":5836255,"projectId":8096135,"letterContent":"Our DonorsChoose projects, Representation Matters and Help Me Build My Library, have had a meaningful impact on the transformative SEL work happening within our school community. These projects helped expand access to diverse, culturally responsive books that allow students and adults to see themselves, their families, and their lived experiences reflected in the stories they read while also learning about the experiences of others.\r\n\r\nThe addition of these texts has strengthened our school's commitment to creating brave, inclusive, and affirming spaces where every child feels seen, valued, and represented. Students are no longer limited to stories that center only one perspective; instead, they are engaging with books that highlight a wide range of racial, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, and family identities. This has created richer opportunities for meaningful SEL conversations rooted in empathy, belonging, identity, perspective-taking, and respect for differences.\r\n\r\nThrough these books, students and adults in our school community have developed important social-emotional and relational skills, including:\r\n\r\n* Building empathy by understanding experiences different from their own\r\n* Strengthening identity development and self-confidence through positive representation\r\n* Learning perspective-taking and respectful dialogue\r\n* Increasing cultural awareness and appreciation for diversity\r\n* Practicing inclusive language and kindness toward peers\r\n* Developing emotional literacy through stories that address feelings, challenges, resilience, and relationships\r\n* Creating stronger peer connections as students recognize shared experiences and emotions\r\n\r\nThe texts have also supported transformative SEL by helping students connect academic learning with real-world human experiences. Classroom discussions have become deeper and more authentic as students openly discuss fairness, inclusion, identity, traditions, emotions, and community. Staff members have also used these books as tools to facilitate conversations around belonging, representation, and creating affirming classroom environments.\r\n\r\nOne of the most powerful outcomes has been the joy students express when they discover characters, families, languages, hairstyles, traditions, and experiences that mirror their own lives. Students who previously struggled to engage in reading are showing increased excitement and participation because they feel personally connected to the stories.\r\n\r\nThe library additions have also sparked curiosity and appreciation among students who are learning about cultures and experiences outside of their own. This has contributed to a more connected school climate where students are asking thoughtful questions, celebrating differences, and building stronger relationships with one another.\r\n\r\nFor adults in the school community, these resources have reinforced the importance of representation in both literacy and SEL practices. My students were absolutely amazed when they first saw the glowing table and colorful manipulatives. Their faces lit up with curiosity as they explored the translucent letters, counting chips, sensory beads, and building tiles together.\r\n\r\nThe light table has quickly become one of the most loved areas in our classroom. Students are using it to practice letter recognition, build shapes and patterns, count and sort objects, and strengthen their fine motor skills through play-based learning. Many of my students, especially those with special needs, benefit greatly from sensory-rich experiences, and the calming glow of the light table helps them stay engaged and focused. One of my students who is often hesitant to participate during group activities eagerly joined classmates to create patterns and trace letters on the table, which was such a meaningful moment to witness.\r\n\r\nAs we continue our classroom studies, the light table will help support future learning in literacy, math, science, and sensory exploration. These experiences are helping them see that math can be fun, engaging, and part of their everyday lives.\r\n\r\nThe new books and materials are introducing important early learning skills such as counting, number recognition, sorting, comparing quantities, patterning, and problem-solving. In our classroom, reading is very interactive. We count together during stories, look for shapes and patterns in the illustrations, ask questions, and encourage students to explain their thinking. The hands-on manipulatives have made a huge difference because many of my preschoolers learn best by touching, moving, and exploring real objects.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who were once hesitant to participate during math activities are now showing more confidence and excitement.
