APES in the Lab

My students need lab supplies for AP Environmental Science (APES)! They also can benefit from the "Cartoon Guide to the Environment" as a supplement to our dense text!

My Students

My AP Environmental Science (APES) students are interested in the Environment, but in our urban environment, we often lack safe places to conduct field work. We must supplement for that loss through engaging and meaningful lab work.

I teach at a selective enrollment high school in Chicago.

My students come mainly from the south side, and while they are engaged, interested and gifted, I still see the cultural divide between city kids and the environment. I am passionate about teaching environmental science because it relates to their lives more than any other singular science course. Through this course they question the issues around them, landfills, pollution, wastewater, and how global climate change will impact their lives - be it physically or economically. To enrich these experiences it is essential for us to conduct thorough labs.

My Project

Through the lab materials I am requesting, students will be able to conduct their own investigations into major Environmental topics. They will analyze wastewater treatment, grow and monitor a population, determine the change in energy flow up the food chain, and use materials to demonstrate the Coriolis Effect, which can be a very abstract concept. In addition, I am requesting a class set of "The Cartoon Guide to the Environment." I have a copy of this book, and use portions already, but having a copy for every student would be incredibly beneficial. It is a fun and easy way to learn about concepts that can feel tedious and boring in the textbook. Through using these resources they will be able to delve into more rigorous lab investigations, which push their thinking beyond the initial concept.

This project will allow my students to investigate the environment from our classroom.

Ideally, I would love to take them out to parks, water sources, and farms, however that is rarely an option due to funding and nearby sources are unsafe to walk to without a security escort. I am confident that these resources will enhance this course and allow students to be excited and thoughtful about the experiences they are having.
