Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

They say kindergarten is the new first grade! When I was in school, kinder was the place to learn letters and social skills. These days, kindergarten kids are expected to read by the end of the year. I need hands on materials to help my students learn their letters, the first step in reading!

This year I have 27 students in my kindergarten class.

Many of them come from Spanish speaking homes and have entered my classroom with no letter knowledge and limited English skills. We are a Title 1 school and most students receive free lunch. My students are sweet, enthusiastic learners with a wide variety of learning styles.

My Project

I have requested a variety of resources to help my students learn to identify letters and sounds in a variety of ways. Every year I struggle with finding new and innovative ways to teach my children these basic skills. With these new materials, we will be making letters with dough and wax sticks, singing, using the Smart board, spelling new words, and sorting objects by letter sounds!

Letter and sound knowledge is truly the foundation for all future learning.

By laying this groundwork to help students learn to read, I am opening doors for future learning. This will not only help the current students in my class but these things will be used for years to come!
