My Students

My wheelchair bound students who are physically disabled would benefit from this bowling ramp. They would be able to independently roll the ball with the use of a specialized switch to bowl.

My students are in wheelchairs and some have multiple disabilities and are not able to hold or push a ball.

Through the day, these students utilize the AAC switch (alternative augmentative communication switch). These devices not only can be used for communication, but also to turn on appliances, and in this case, release the bowling ball.

My Project

Imagine yourself in the bowling alley and everyone is taking turns bowling, even some of the other students are able to push the ball from a ramp. However, you can only sit there and watch. You have to wait until an adult is free and can come over to help you push the ball. Everyday you use similar switches,but now with this new equipment that uses a release switch, you don't need assistance. You can do it independently and when you use the switch, you watch the ball go down the ramp and hit the pins. You get really excited and happy and you want to do it again. The best part is that you did it on your own. Wouldn't you like that?

The joy that you see in a child's face when they are able to do what everyone else is doing is an amazing feeling, not just for the students but for the adults.

Their smiles showing pride and excitement are contagious and you want to do more just to see the joy in their faces.
