This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Did you know that only 1 out of every 8 students that leave first grade not reading at grade level will ever read at grade level? This statistic is frightening. My goal is to motivate my students to read each day. Access to tablets will promote the integration of reading and technology in the class.

My students are six and seven year old kids that have the potential to be amazing readers.

Research shows that first grade is a crucial year when learning to read. Eighty percent of students that are not at grade level when they leave first grade, will never be on grade level. My students live in a transient area. This year alone I have had three students move out and three different students move in. I do not know where they go when they leave me but I do know that I want to give them the best education that I can before they leave. My students have amazing potential. My goal for each of them is for them to read at a second grade level before they leave first grade. Motivation is the key.

My Project

Accelerated Reader is a program the motivates students to read books that are at their level. Reading at their level promotes better reading fluency and comprehension. Once the students read their book, they take a comprehension assessment online. Having tablets available in my classroom will enable me to monitor their assessments to ensure they can comprehend what they have read. Without tablets in my classroom, I would have to send first graders one at a time out to the computer lab. Sending students out to the lab would not only be distracting to the rest of my students, but the students taking the test will take longer to log on the Accelerated Reader, forcing them to miss important reading instruction. Tablets in the classroom will take my accelerating readers to the next level in reading as well as technology.

Learn to read, read to learn.

That is the motto in my classroom. Once my students are able to read, the world is wide open to them. They can choose to read fiction to enhance their imaginations or they can read non-fiction to learn about the world around them. Having tablets in the classroom will take their explorations to the next level. The world will truly be their oyster.
