My Students

I teach 1st grade in an economically depressed town in southern Louisiana. Teachers do the best we can with the limited funds that are available to purchase equipment to make learning interesting and exciting for children.

My project is to inspire 6- and 7-year-old children to read.

My students come from home environments that do not always understand the importance of reading. The dropout rate is very high, teen pregnancy is common, and hunger is prevalent. It can be very challenging to create an interest in reading books. I find that through the use of technology and other techniques, the students are fascinated and their attention is held so that learning goes on in the classroom.

My Project

I have set up reading learning centers in my classroom to use a variety of interventions. I would like to have a listening center with a CD/DVD player with headphones at one of my centers. Students will be able to listen to stories on tape, which is fun and educational. The benefits to each child are many. They can read along, listen to the inflections in the reader voice which they will mimic, understand the story line, identify characters and, just as important, develop a desire for MORE reading. This will help them learn to read and encourage them to take books from my library and read them without being instructed to do so.

It is so important to end illiteracy now.

Once a child learns how to read, a whole world opens up to them and hopefully a brighter future. I would like my students to know what is out in the world, available to them, and reading can do this for them.
