A Square Peg in a Round Hole...Mismatched Technology

My students need 1 HDTV television and 1 HP laptop to facilitate instruction that incorporates technology.

My Students

The buzzing blue screen is driving us insane! Being scrunched up in front of a 12" monitor is compromising our eyesight! Our Elmo is gathering dust because we don't have anything to project it upon. We need to step into this century and FAST!

My inquisitive brood of 1st graders is fast loosing patience with the seemingly ineptness of their technologically challenged teacher.

We are part of an impoverished district in North Carolina. Our school is a Title 1 school which for us means that nearly 96% of our students are economically challenged. Where they are does not define them; I refuse to let this be their final reality. My assignment EVERY DAY is to enrich their lives by exposing them to concepts and a world that is right outside of their realm. Try as I might, I am thwarted at every opportunity when it comes to technology and bringing the world into our class as new and exciting things are happening. We have a television that might as well have aluminum rabbit ears for all the service it provides. The screen turns blue and buzzes so loud that we have it on mute, before we turn it on. We have a VHS machine, but not a DVD player. I don't even know if people are producing VHS tapes anymore!

My Project

We need some technology that will compliment each other and allow for us to expand components. I am asking for an HP laptop that would be connected to the Sony HDTV television. The Hewlett Packard laptop and television will work in concert to help me show streaming videos shown on Discovery Education. We have an Elmo document viewer, but not a projector. My hope is that I can connect the Elmo to the television so the documents, books and items would be easier for the entire class to see. The television is equipped with VGA, HMDI and some other ABC stuff - the bottom line is that it will allow me to hook up different components to it so it can be an effective educational tool. The laptop has the potential to be another computer in our room where children can hone their computer skills as well as access other educational websites that can be used in small groups instead of isolation. This proposal has the potential to help us tremendously.

These materials will help us to work more efficiently in small groups and to broaden their horizons.

My hope is that you will help me make their lives academically rich by equipping me with the opportunities to expose them to new and exciting experiences. We appreciate your consideration.
