A Lovely Literary and Learning Library

My students need 4 sets of leveled reality-based reading materials. I have too much fiction and fantasy.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are immersed in fantasy and fiction. Their world is full of adventures, mysteries, magic and imaginary happenings in their computer games, the books they read, the movies they see and more. I want my children to see the real world, learn real things and become curious about reality.

My students are from a lower income neighborhood of an urban area in California.

They are ethnically diverse with several languages being spoken by my children. They are friendly, lively, curious and love to read. I have a few parent volunteers who visit my class on a regular basis as well as others from non-profit organization. We have developed ways of solving problems, by talking things out, using what we call the "peace path", a structured communication that allows resolution of differences while avoiding the assignation of guilt and a rigorous and high standard of behavior in the classroom. They are good children even if needy.

My Project

I am beginning to seek out non-fiction books. They absolutely love this kind of text so much so that it almost does not seem to matter what kind of non-fiction book I read to them. They enjoy them all. I've read about seahorses, an elderly woman's wish for a wonderful hat and how her children got her that hat, about what sand is, how season change or what clouds are made of. I feel this is partly due to them being so used to fantasy. What I love to do is to take one of these books and project it on the wall, read it with them and then, as we read, take questions, tell stories, make connections and, in general, learn as we go. They take it all in. My students will be explorers with me, for I to, almost inevitably, find out something new and we then share that "wow" moment. More of that please, that's what I want.

My students enjoy reading.

But I have noticed that to many of the books I have are fiction, or, more specifically fantasy. Engaging as these books can be, they are not reality based. I believe that they have much to much time with fantasy material whether it be movies, books, computer games or what have you. When I read non-fiction books to them they get excited and are very engaged. I believe that I should balance out my library and begin to add in a rich variety of non fiction books.
