My Students

The transition to high school is an exciting and often overwhelming experience for young people. Students face both academic challenges and social challenges. In the face of this enormous transition they need guidance and a way to share their ideas about how to cope.

I teach at a small urban magnet school in a major city.

My students come from neighborhoods all over our city. Some of them travel more than an hour on public transportation in order to attend our school everyday. Our school is incredibly mixed in terms of race, social class, and personal history. Some of my students come from very supportive homes and others have managed to succeed in homes that provide them with very little emotional or academic support.

My Project

The book 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens provides young people with a chance to reflect upon the choices they make and encourages them to choose to behave with intention as they negotiate their teenage years and the rest of their lives. Students will read this book in sections, will discuss sections with a smaller reading group, and will be participants in larger whole class discussions.

This project allows students to make real changes in their lives.

By reading and discussing a book they will be able to come to their own realizations about the choices they make. Self-directed learning and peer discussion are two of the most powerful roads towards personal transformation and growth.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
