I teach at a small urban magnet school in a major city. My students come from neighborhoods all over our city. Some of them travel more than an hour on public transportation in order to attend our school everyday. Our school is incredibly mixed in terms of race, social class, and personal history. Some of my students come from very supportive homes and others have managed to succeed in homes that provide them with very little emotional or academic support.
