Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I'm an expert on me!" What better subject to write about than what my students actually know and can describe. As my students write about what they know they become more comfortable writing about other topics.
Fortunately, I am blessed with working with an incredible group of second graders each day.
They are just beginning to learn to take sentences and put them into a paragraph format where their words flow and make sense. Our school, although high performing, is part of a Title 1 district where a majority of students are underperforming. Since the students at our individual school perform well on state tests we are not given extra or additional funds for supplies. I want to encourage good writing habits while establishing expectations that will follow these students throughout their educational career.
My Project
Writing about specific topics can be an overwhelming activity when students are just transitioning from first grade to second grade. The ability to write complete sentences is an essential skill that each student must master.
I am asking for writing center materials that students can use each day as a portion of our writing lesson to review what they've learned. Additionally, I'm requesting paper and white board erasers so students can use them to practice their newly developed skills.
Not only will students improve their knowledge on sentence creation, these materials will reinforce the need to add details, too. I'm also thrilled that they can work in groups on many of these activities which will help in building class teamwork and communication.
Becoming a good writer is a skill that students need and this is the grade where it all comes together.
They begin to tell stories and respond to literature or describe what has happened during a science experiment. All of this is possible when my students have the necessary materials that help them be successful. Thank you for helping to make this happen!
