My Students

I am a reading teacher in a high school with a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students. We are also a New York State cited school "in need of academic improvement." Many of my students struggle in all content areas as a direct result of their reading struggles.

My students are bright, talented, and highly creative young adults.

Unfortunately many of them are still reading at an elementary level resulting in their disengagement with reading and learning in general. These kids have been struggling for so long that reading and writing have become unrewarding and anxiety creating activities. I would like to help my students to see the pleasures of reading and also to recognize their own unique strengths and abilities.

My Project

This coming school year we will be offering a Literacy class for the first time. In light of budget cuts there is not an abundance of funding for resources. I would like to order a set of the Bluford High Series of books for students to use during SSR (Silent Sustained Reading) and a class set of "Crank" by Ellen Hopkins as a class read. These pieces of young adult literature are engaging and relevant to young adults' lives. I would like to use these high interest texts as the launching pad for developing a life long love of reading among my students.

Literacy skills and education are directly correlated with future incomes.

Students with poor literacy skills are more likely to drop out of school and never pursue a college education. Increasing my students literacy skills will reduce the number of high school drop outs and inspire kids to not only graduate from high school, but to hopefully continue on to college.
