My Students

My students are all second-chance kids. They arrived at this program because they stopped attending an old school, got pregnant, became involved with drugs or gangs, or encountered violence at school and needed to get out.

Most of them are over-age for their grades and wouldn't be able to graduate without switching into an alternative program like this one.

We are not a dumping ground for "bad kids"; we are a challenging program with high admissions standards and high expectations of all our students. We keep the classrooms small (a maximum of 15 students, typically 10-12) and provide each student with as much personalized attention as they need to succeed.

My Project

My students tend not to be the most organized bunch of kids. Their homework gets lost with alarming regularity, and other materials (review sheets, old quizzes, and notes) seem to disappear from their binders without rhyme or reason. Papers end up under the bed, stuck in the couch cushions, washed in the laundry, left on the subway, and every other place you could imagine. More often than not, though, my students don't even know what happened or where their things went. My hope is that by providing them with a clear, individualized place to store their old papers and notes, they will not have as much of an issue with organization. Combined with the organization materials I requested in another project on DonorsChoose, my goal is to receive every completed homework assignment and never again hear, "Miss, I lost my notes for that." In reforming student organization, I also hope to become more organized myself, with a teacher planner and organization materials.

This is where, I hope, you come in.

Without your donation, we will not be able to supply these students with the organizational materials they need for next year. Your donation, no matter how small, will go towards helping my students improve their organizational skills, in addition to teaching them strategies and skills that will hopefully carry on beyond my classroom. I hope that this helps them in their quest to continue on to college.
