My third grade class and I engaged in an author study of Jon Scieszka. During this learning experience the children were so fascinated with this author's ability to create a different story from a traditional tale that they begged me to let them create some stories of their own. (Of course that was my intention but I pretended to be persuaded). I then decided to create a webquest on fairytales and we further explored this exciting genre. My students created fabulous tales of their own and we ended this project by creating pop-up books of their fairy tales. As an extension of their learning I decided to have the kids write a play on Jon Scieszka's "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs." I videotaped their efforts and then got the idea to teach my kids how to make a movie using Imovie software. The problem is that our school has a somewhat out-dated lab and the computers we have do not have the Imovie software on them. I am respectfully asking that we are granted at least one Apple (Mac) computer or labtop and a video camera so that we can have these excellent learning tool in our classroom. My students have already shown that they are interesting in using different kinds of technology. We have learned how to make graphs using Excel and we did a fabulous project on the planets using Appleworks to create drawings and then importing the drawings into PowerPoint to create a slide show. I would be appreciative if they can explore the world of Imovie since I truly believe that their learning experience would be greatly enriched by this learning tool. They are now much more interesting in writing, now that we are exploring the concept of turning their written works into movies. I believe that works from every genre can be turned into a movie. This option of creating movies is a great motivator for budding authors and I am very excited by the interest my students have been showing in our Reading & Writing Workshops. We express our thanks in advance with the anticipation that our request would be granted.
