I am a first grade teacher at a Title I school where over 30% of our student population participates in our free breakfast and lunch program. Also, over 30% of our student population are English Language Learners. Our families come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. Many or most of my students have never attended a dramatic production during their lifetime. The opportunity to see the costumes, props, scenery, music and actors COME ALIVE on stage would be such a fulfilling and exciting experience for these children. The play that we would like to attend is the "Ugly Ducking" presented by the California Theater Center at the Amador Theater in Pleasanton. I have 20 students and anticipate having eight adult chaperones in attendance, as well. I am anticipating that this experience will help the students when we do our own plays in the classroom. I feel that "acting" in our own plays will build self-confidence and strengthen reading skills.
