Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Music is the universal language. We listen to it, dance to it, even watch it! For so many people, they regret not learning to play music when they were younger. That could change if there were an instrument in my students' hands!
Passionate, resilient and talented - my elementary school students have been through a lot in their 5-10 years of life.
Coming from many different countries, different family situations, some moving from home to home or shelter to shelter, my students have experienced many things that most adults have not. However one thing they have not experienced is the opportunity to play a musical instrument.
They love their music. Some come to school extra early just to be in a music program. They feel safe, confident and free when they're into their musical mode.
We have listened to many styles of music from many countries, danced to many rhythms, and watched recordings of well-known composers and musicians playing instruments.
I see the excitement in my students' eyes when they see someone able to make music by hitting an instrument with their own hands.
My Project
Learning to play music has benefits that stretch across a wide range of educational subjects. Skills such as organization and coordination come along with analyzing the written music and higher level thinking while putting it onto a physical instrument.
The xylophones, boomwhackers and djembes we've requested will help students learn to read music and put it onto certain pitches of instruments. Adding in the djembes will allow students the opportunity to learn to listen to each other and work together as an ensemble.
If allowed to get these instruments, my students will not only become better musicians through hands-on experience, but also will gain the confidence they'll need to believe in themselves and reach their full potential in life!
Even though my students don't come from families or even a community that can give them all the musical opportunities they deserve, their love for music is undeniable!
I'm sure, with the gift of actual classroom instruments that will be used from year to year, many students will be able to learn important life skills while enjoying being a child like they should. In their world, some which are very hectic, being able to have the chance to play an instrument might be one of their best memories.
