Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am just finishing up animal reports with my first grade students in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood. The students have to consult a nonfiction animal book, jot down facts and details, create a rough draft, and then work with me to make a final draft. The finished product is then shared in front of the class. As we wrap up this writing unit, I'm thinking ahead and envisioning this project next year. My classroom library's collection of nonfiction books on animals is sparse, and I would like to add as many titles as possible for my students to use this time next year. In theory, the students should have multiple sources as they try to learn about their chosen animal. I have selected books from particular publishers that I know to be grade-level appropriate and accessible for my students. These books would be used for many years to come, and would be shared with another first grade teacher. Exciting as the animal reports have been this year, I have great plans for how to make them even more meaningful next year. Thank you for helping to make my students research experts!
